Research Projects

  • Waste to Energy Project in partnership with SPC and USP
  • Market Setting-Battery Storage Project in PNG in partnership with ANU
  • Rural Electrification Planning Project in partnership with UNSW

Consultancy Projects

Current

  • IFC-funded PNG Smallgrids Projects with TTA and ECA
    • Technically assessing (Demand, Distribution, Generation) a few PPL minigrids  and identifying potential solar farm sites in preparation for more active participation of the private sector
  • IFC-funded Pacific Sustainable Finance Project with ECA
    • Assess the supply and demand of renewable energy and energy efficiency uptake in PNG. Including identifying the challenges of accessing finance and suggesting potential products that financial institutes can offer.

     Completed

September 2021-February 2022 “PPL Minigrids Upgrade”

Site-specific data collection for the PPL-run  Kerema, Vanimo and Aitape Minigrid Upgrade Project that will include rehabilitation of the existing power station and development of a solar farm. In addition, develop the environmental, climate change and social safeguards assessment. The final output was a Feasibility Study and FEED

Client: ESIP                  Lead Contractor: JID Global

August 2021-January 2022 “Sustainable Energy for Telefomin”

Site-specific data collection for specific sustainable energy interventions for Telefomin station and nearby satellite villages. The potential sustainable energy interventions include solar homes systems, standalone systems for government infrastructure, distributive rooftop PV, solar farms, rehabilitation of the existing minigrid, rehabilitating of existing microhydro system, and development of new hydro.  The scoping mission included a rapid ESIA and the development of the Gender Action Plan. The final output was a scoping mission report (pre-feasibility study).

Client: UNOPS                       Lead Contractor: TTA

July 2021 -January 2022 “PPL Minigrids Upgrade”

Site-specific data collection for the PPL-run  Finschhafen and Maprik Minigrid Upgrade Project that will include rehabilitation of the existing power station and development of a solar farm. In addition, developed the environmental, climate change and social safeguards assessment. The final output was a Feasibility Study and FEED

Client: ESIP/DFAT                     Lead Contractor: JID Global

October 2020-March 2021

Managed CoRE’s roles to gather specific site-related information in 10 PPL minigrid centres (Wewak, Maprik, Alotau, Kimbe, Gazelle, Buka, Arawa, Kavieng and Lorengau/Lombrum)) which will subsequently led to a high-level assessment of demand growth, existing grid infrastructure and potential generation projects.

Client: IFC                       Lead Contractor: ITP Renewables

November 2020-January 2021

Gather specific site-related information in three rural hospitals (Kerema, Daru and Popondetta) which will subsequently help inform the system design and sizing of an anticipated battery-backup solar photovoltaic (PV) system. The final output was a Scoping Study for each hospital.

Client: UNOPS                       Lead Contractor: TTA

November 2018-November 2021

UNDP-funded micro-agreement project (sub-project of FREAGER) to produce educational & awareness materials for solar/hydro minigrids and energy efficiency that involves training workshops in 3 pilot provinces of East Sepik, Milne Bay and the Eastern Highlands

Client: UNDP                       Lead: CoRE

August 2017-November 2017

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Baseline Survey in 3 rural communities (Keapara, Imuagoro and Kalo) in Central Province before the implementation of 3 water-energy projects. Project managed by GIZ through CCDA

Client: GIZ/CCDA                     Lead: CoRE
