The University of Papua New Guinea on the 28th of April, 2017 officially launched the Centre of Renewable Energy and the Master of Science in Renewable Energy Management. Both Programmes were initiatives of the European Commission and administered by the ACP Secretariat.

Dignitaries from the United Nations Development Programme, PNG Power, EU Delegation of PNG, Department of Planning and Monitoring , Department of Petroleum and Energy, UNESCO, New Zealand High Commission, Mineral Resources Authority,  Independent Consumer & Competition Commission and Climate Change and Development Authority as well as Deans, and Senior Executive Management of UPNG.

The Acting Dean of Science Prof Kaluwin opened the event by stressing on the importance of universities in trialling new and innovative ideas in the area of energy and environment that included degree programmes.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of UPNG Mr Malaibe than emphasised on the need of modern energy from renewable sources, and the CEO of PNGRST Prof Matainaho underlined how PNGRST can assist in growing and developing new and innovative ideas in the area of renewable energy. Finally the speeches were ended by Mr Roy Trivedy, the country rep for UNDP, again stressing on UNs Sustainable Development Goal Seven (7) and how both programmes will assist, as well as UNDP’s current initiatives in PNG and the Pacific.

Mr Mailabe and the Acting Pro-VC Academic Prof Matui signified the launching of the MScREM by unveiling the pull-up banner of the program, with the theme “Building Champions in Sustainable Energy”.

Prof Matainaho and Mr Trivedy launched CORE by unveiling the CORE pull-up banner.
